Shoutouts to the Sosa Girls Latasha and Briselli. We then took a trip to Hartford, CT for the Trinity 5th Annual International Hip Hop Festival this past weekend

Of course, as the monopolizer of the "reality TV" market, VH1 now exapnds its programming to include "Basketball Wives", a look into the "lives" of the wives and "girlfriends" of certain NBA players. As expected, these women are ALL stunners, so of course I'll be watching it. Throw in EXTRA cattiness and I'm convinced that I'll be in my crib every Sunday night towatch this shit. Sup ya'll. Long time no see. Aside from the Eric Sosa post, it's been a helluva long time since I've updated. A lot's been happening both good and bad....

First off, this week, I was dealt a blow. I was laid off from my job at the music publishing company where I was working. I'm honestly not upset that I was laid off, particularly since I learned a lot + the fact that I felt like leaving anyway, but it's just the fact that the shit happened before I expected. I've been weighing the pros and cons in my mind and there's still some negative feelings but end of the day, I learned a lot that'll help me out regarding my own initiatives.

I'm not one of those dudes who identifies himself with his occupation (ie, take away a job and you're left with an empty shell of a man), particularly because I have other sources and options of getting $....it's just the fact that I've NEVER been laid off. Every job or internship that I've had, I always left on my own accord. I like having that option, control and leverage, especially knowing that my level of work. I'm not gonna say my whole thoughts on the situation, but I will say that when one door closes, another one opens. It is an alien feeling to me though....

Ladies wise, I've been doing OK. It's a straight "numbers game" out here to me, and I really dont beat around the bush about that. I've accepted that I'm probably not going to be the "ideal boyfriend" and I can be a bit self centered when I get in my zone, but when you have me, you have me 100%. I'm probably too upfront about certain things but me (as someone who likes to know all the facts about shit before I jump in a situation), I dont think it's right to not let a girl I like know those things. I also dont look at it as having anything to lose ANYWAY so......I've never been one to restrict someone's emotional freedom. So it's like "I like you, you like me, we click, but _________. The decision is now yours". My moms been bugging me about "getting married" (????), which I translate as "I want some grand kids"...considering that she's a bit older. I'm really not shit in certain regards...but it doesn't really bother me. You all probably wouldnt believe some of the stuff I've encountered in the past two or three months, so I'm not even gonna go there. You know when they say "skeletons in the closet"? I'm talking fucking bone collections here. I aint one to judge (too harshly anyway) particularly since I aint rushing into a relationship, but I just choose not to deal with it because it's really not my problem.....

Then, there's "her". I recently told a friend that we were "overdue" to get with each other. "Get with" as in a sense of a committed relationship where we can take over the world together, no bullshit (from my end at least). The only girl I probably really ever wanted. I've been described as a pessimist, but I deal with facts...and I've come to accept that 1.) I hate "the chase", 2.) I suck at "closure", and 3.) I'm really impatient. My dad recently asked me if I had a girl and "what happened to this one and that one"...I always change the subject. We BOTH know what time it is. I noticed that I've NEVER brought a girl home to meet my family...and I think that fucks with them as parents. I dont even have friends that I'd hook my single female friends with....

Other than that, things've been looking up. One.

In my quest for personal growth, I've gone back to hitting the gym the past few weeks. It's past due that I've shed my sloppy winter eating habits and cheesecake addiction. Add a gym regimen to growing my beard and attempting to put away the glasses in favor of contacts.

I'm what they call an ectomorph, meaning I'm the skinny type who has to train harder to gain muscle mass. Also, our metabolisms are usually extremely fast but we can lose fat easily. I've been told that I have to eat around 4 times a day for the weight to stick to me. It makes sense because even if I have a big breakfast around 8:30 A.M., I'm usually hungry by like 10:30 or so. I've been pacing my meals/snacks and have cut back on eating shit like McDonalds (besides the fact that they're collecting feces samples on my shitlist for their abso-fucking-lutely asinine and questionable commericals that have been airing lately) for breakfast.

I've been doing a bit of lifting exercises in the weight room and stuff. I also visited www.bodybuilding.com to figure out which workout will suit me and my schedule best. Also looking into getting a whey protein...I usually drink Muscle Milk but I'm about to try a new joint out. Protein bars are a tossup since they normally taste like frog thighs. I've gained a few pounds so.....

Biggest difference with me working out isn't even physical. I'm thinking faster and clearer. Also the playlist I have specifically for the gym is nothing to play with. As you can expect, hard hip hop with cats like Styles P, Ghostface Killah, DMX, Raekwon, Prodigy and shit. You can't work out like a pussy. I aint saying you gotta lift the heaviest weight in the gym, but sometimes you need X barking or a DJ Premier beat to pace your sets with....if you're lifting that is.....

Nevermind what i was gonna say about nicely shaped women in spandex.......

I've been in a battle ya'll. A conflict that's been fuckin' with me for a minute now. It got real to me the other day. Almost like a mental panic attack. I'll just vent here.

I'm at a point where I feel like the talent is separating itself from the pack and that people arent' recognizing that. One of the first things I ever learned in the business came from my man/former boss Mitch Dudley @ Sony Red. I didn't like a certain artist's music but had to do an online marketing/consumer awareness campaign. I kept it funky with Mitch and was like "Yo...this kid is WACK man...no one's gonna fuck with this." You know what Mitch told me? (in few words) "You're not gonna like all these artists, but we still gotta push them. It's a job". That shit always stood out to me. Always. Here I am, outta college,working/grinding out for my own company, and that convo comes to mind.

I've always been the type to do things MY way. I guess that's why I'm so calculating and deliberate. I'm the type to do things after heavy thinking about the actions/reactions. This is a character flaw, but I tend to only listen to people who are doing better than me or who know more than me (and admittedly, I'm actively trying to get a lesson from ANYBODY, whether they're doing better than me or not...but it's an uphill battle lol). This also touches on a specific Taurus trait: stubbornness. I put all that aside because a.) ego is always deceptive and 2.) I dont know everything.

I love working with legit talent. When you believe in an artist's talent, the ideas just come in the blink of an eye. I had a meeting a while back and I'm sitting there like "This shit is WACK! It aint gonna sell!". Ideas pitched back and forth and I'm like "Do you all not see the climate for this type of artist? Not only is he not original, but look at his competition as well!". It's like no market research was done prior to this meeting, nothing stood out to me as to why me as a consumer would want to buy a record from this cat (never mind that it's just my personal opinion)...Not only that,but I'm thinking about my name here as well. Not to be on some shit, but I know too many people and in this business, all it takes is one blunder (or lame artist for you to be associated with) for you to have your name smeared. Even little shit like rarely drinking when I go out or eye contact. It's a state of perpetual motion. You have to be mentally prepared.

This is probably "subconscious-post college-nervousness" talking. I'm a firm believer that options can and will make or break you in any aspect of life. Professionally, I've learned nothing lasts forever and that you should have a plan C to back up A&B. I crave stability, BUT as an entrepreneur, there's always that constant bumrush. I like the adrenaline and it's sharpened my thinking/rational skills. I'm used to having a "side hustle" (poor choice of words as it's bigger than anything else I've got going on right now). I did this shit in my sleep through college. school,work and internship. I aint sweating that. It's not always about money as much as it is personal values. I'm 23. Lord willing, the money will come. You know your values when you don't have money more than you do. Someone's (i think it was Jigga) said that money doesn't change you, it just brings the real you out even more.

This will play itself out.

T-Mac and What This Will Mean For The Knicks

Last night marked the beginning of Tracy Mcgrady's (and Eddie House and Sergio Rodriguez's) tenure in New York. We Knicks fans have been abused by Tracy and Eddie when they both played for the Rockets and Celtics respectively, so seeing them in our uniforms was somewhat comforting. They give us two offensive weapons and in Mac's case, a legit shooting guard who can play to the dynamic standards of what a 2 is supposed to play like. (Yes, shots fired at Larry Hughes........)

Shooting it out with a team like the Thunder is no small feat as they have one of the top 2 pure scorers in the game in Kevin Durant. They also have Russell Westbrook and Jeff Green who are extremely solid players in their own right, as well as James Harden, Thabo Sefalosha and Nick Collison. It's not a game anymore as this young group has risen to become one of the better teams in the West.

And yes, it was entertaining as hell. We lost, but I noticed a few things that I'll get into:

Just based off this one game, I'd say we can afford to have Chris Duhon come off the bench to back up Sergio Rodriguez (if not have him not play the rest of the season....). Mike D's offense is heavily perimeter based and for some reason, it looked like Sergio got "it" in his first game. We finally have a guard who is willing to repeatedly penetrate the D and dish off. Duhon's been with the Knicks for quite some time now and it doesn't look like he's getting any better. With Sergio, we have a guard who can make our pick and roll way more effective by passing to a cutting David Lee, a trailing T-Mac, or Danilo G or Al Harrington (who I'll address later) on the perimeter. There's no reason for Duhon to have played 20+ minutes and end up with 0 points and 2 assists. Sergio played 25 minutes with 5 points, 6 assists and 2 turnovers.
Eddie House is one of those players who you LOATHE when he's on the other team but root for when he's on your squad. Dude has a cannon and hit some go-ahead shots in the 4th. Season high 24 points. He can benefit greatly from playing with a drive/dish guard like Sergio. His ball handling is less than advertised but I can live with that. If he plays the 2 on D, he is obviously a defensive liability, but he makes up for that with his intangibles and shot making.
David Lee is a guy who doesnt need plays ran to get buckets, so he'll definitely thrive with Sergio and co on the floor with him. He'll need a backup center for sure as our next big man is Jonathan Bender who at 6'11 plays like a 2 anyway....He had 30/10
Al Harrington is being exposed. I never was a fan of his game....a 6'9 tweener who doesnt make up for that in good shot selection and defense. Dude is streaky as hell. It's crazy that he was our leading scorer at one period. I honestly dont think he will get along with T-Mac. If he's off the bench, he can be a potent 6th man. I can easily see an Alpha Male battle for this team for some reason...
Wilson needs to learn how not to force the game. He's improved and is good at getting to the line. With his slashing skills, him and Mac can produce from the line as well as play off each other.
Gallo? T-Mac can play point-forward and handle the rock. Don't wanna restrict Gallo to just being a 3 point shooter...but if it aint broke dont fix it. He's extremely crafty but sometimes I cringe watching him handle the rock.
We need a big. Preferably one with shot-blocking skills.

My first time reading The Autobiography of Malcolm X was in college for my freshman year English Class. The assignment was for a few chapters out of the book, but my interest was so piqued that I ended up buying the whole book. Having read it numerous times over and over, I will definitely say that Malcolm stood out to me as a man of principle who did not believe in cutting corners or shy away from doing what he believe was his purpose, even to the point of being demonized in the media and death

He paid the ultimate price for his beliefs. One thing that stood out to me was that Malcolm repeatedly expressed that he KNEW he was going to die young. It always sort of bothered me every time I read the book. Even when I watch X, I can't watch the movie past the part where Malcolm is about to enter the Audobon and he briefly chats with an old woman who wishes him well. Shot 16 times by assassins as he spoke during a meeting for the Organization of Afro-American Unity. His own people.

Rest in power El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz Your efforts have not been in in vain. We still have a long way to go, but you provided a brilliant example to follow. You talked the talk and walked the walk. You eloquently expressed your beliefs and stood by what you believed in. Thank you for being a role model for young brothers such as myself. Even though I don't subscribe to any particular religion, I see the way you lived your life with principle and conviction. Thank you for everything you have done for us.

Tuesday morning. 1 A.M. I just came home from a typical long ass day and was trying to chill out. I don't normally watch too much TV in the week because I'm always out so when I come home, I normally just watch Sportscenter to see the NBA scores and highlights but no....something new was in store. My bro was laughing hysterically and I just had to see what was so funny.....

I see its this show on VH1. VH1 always has "hit or miss" programming on, but I'll acknowledge that damn near all of the shows are entertaining in their own way shape or form (despite how many attention whores and imbeciles get on these shows....). Off top, the women were older and attractive, so I peeped game. The cast is:

Upon researching stuff for this entry, I see the show is billed as "“show about sex, dating, and finding Mr. Right". Me being a young 23rd year old hot blooded male, I'm watching it 1.) to see attractive older women with disposable income (shoutouts to Joumana, ex wife of Jason Kidd) and 2.) to see how these women go about their quest. Not only that, but I saw Pep deep throat a banana on The Surreal Life so.....

I have a habit of taking things too seriously. It's a flaw...but when I saw the show, I had nothing to do but laugh. It looked like a train wreck. I actually feel bad for Pep and the crew. They seem like they mean well. Some of em had gone through divorces and bad dating situations. Live/learn. I know it's entertainment, but still. The thing is, I see Pepa doing things that some women my age and younger do. I felt bad because Jacque...who seems to be the most levelheaded one is reduced to speed dating...but hey...w/e works right?

One particular scene, her and the girls are outside of a club hollering at a brolic, barechested sanitation worker named "Animal". It's like watching The Older Single Women's Guide To Desperate Measures. Funny shit.

In another scene, Kittie finally meets up with a guy she'd been talking to online for three years. Phone sex and all that before meeting in person. They poly for a bit then head back to the crib. She comes out in "more comfortable attire" and this dude won't take his shirt off. He goes as far to suggest them watching TV. Understandbly, the mood got killed and she kicks him out telling him to "take his glass". He goes "I'll email it to you". Priceless...

It's not intellectually stimulating but the shit is entertaining. I had my share of jokes on Twitter about this..but on some real shit...I kinda feel bad for Pep...it's like "Grow up" already. Her "history" might work against her as well as she ends up meeting a dude who knows her ex husband Treach very well. I've always said that the degrees of separation in NY are 5-6 and if you're in the "industry", it's about 1-3. Classic example.

It's like watching the MILFs you wanna meet in bars and let have their way with you...but then you're watching their everyday lives and you're like.

But who am I to judge? Either way, I'ma be tuning in. Good job VH1....

On April 19,1994, the landscape of hip hop changed. Forever. The bar for lyricism was raised.

This album defines 90s hip hop in its purest form to me. No disrespect to Only Built for Cuban Linx, Reasonable Doubt, Ready To Die, Life After Death, etc, but peep game:

Backstory: Nas had it coming. The opening verse on Main Source's "Live At The BBQ" was manhandled by the precocious lyricist from the Queensbridge projects. "Halftime" put him further on the map and he ended up linking with MC Serch, which then lead to him getting a contract from Columbia. He was infamous for saying lines like "when I was 12, I went to hell for snuffin' Jesus" and for his vivid lyricism which had gotten him comparisons to Kool G Rap and Rakim. Illmatic dropped and was critically acclaimed. Commercially, the album took a while (try 7 years and a few months) to be certified platinum. Either way, there was a new kid on the block....

Album: The album begins PERFECTLY with a convo amongst Nas, AZ and Jungle: "Ayo Nas, what the fuck is this bullshit on the radio?" (sounds all too familiar).."It's Illmatic"...On "New York State of Mind", DJ Premier throws a sinister instrumental complete with piano sample to Nas who begins his narrative with the infamous rhyme: "Rappers I monkey flip em with the funky rhythm I be kickin/musician and flippin' composition of pain, I'm like Scarface sniffin cocaine with an M-16/See with the pen, I'm extreme" Rife with lines like "I'm a addict for sneakers, 20s of Buddha and bitches with beepers/In the streets I could greet ya, about blunts I teach ya", the song is a display of lyrical dexterity unmatched by someone of his age bracket. A then unsigned AZ nearly steals the show on "Life's A Bitch", proclaiming "Fuck who's the baddest, a person's status depends on salary". He also had the honor of being the only guest feature on this masterpiece. Nas recounts days of his "youth" with proverbs like "The buck that bought the battle coulda struck the lotto". When you pair the two pitbulls with Olu Dara's smooth saxophone exit, it makes for a helluva track.

The legendary Pete Rock produced piano tinged "The World Is Yours" where Nas shows the state of mind of an introvert with superb rhyme skills: "I'm the young city bandit, hold myself down singlehanded....born alone, die alone...I need a new nigga for this black cloud to follow...."

The thump and bells of "Halftime" provide the perfect audio backdrop for Nasir go off with verbal explosions like "another dose and I might be dead, I'm a Nike head, I wear chains that excite the Feds" (which spawned slogans for countless streetwear brands). 5th track of the album and I'm not bored yet. No filler. I mean it's impossible to get bored when you hear lines like "in the darkness, I'm heartless like when the narcs hit/word to Marcus Garvey, I hardly sparked it". "Memory Lane" shows us glimpses of Nas' past. He was a bit of an enigma so this track captures him as a person effortlessly as he pays homage with his stomping grounds with a "coming outta Queensbridge" sample on the chorus (Interesting to note that DJ Premier's synergy with Nas on the album is arguably more noticeable than anyone else's).

The eternally classic "One Love" captures Nas at his most emotionally vulnerable over a Q-Tip produced backdrop as he writes a kite to an incarcerated scarface relating the events that have gone down since his boy's imprisonment. This track is THE song that displays Nas' uncanny mastery over narrative tales. You can't help but identify with him: "Sometimes I sit back with a Buddha sack, mind's in another world thinking how could we exist through the facts?" The scenario in the third verse was brought to life in Belly (quite cleverly, Mr. Hype Williams)

"One Time 4 Your Mind" is probably the most laid back we've seen Nas on the album. I bet he really did "contact 11 Ls and max in heaven" writing this Large Professor produced song. Just effortless and polished, yet still rough around the edges. The ruckus starting "Represent" gives Nas a chance to kill it for one last time over a Primo beat. Straight filthy rhyme schemes: "This nigga raps with a razor, keep it under my tongue/The school dropout, never liked the shit from day one/cuz life aint shit but stress, fake niggas and crabs guts/So i guzzle my Hennessey while pulling on mad blunts/the brutalizer, Buddha sizer, accelerator/the type of nigga who be pissing in your elevator...Nowadays, I need the green in a flash just like the next man/Fuck a yard God, let me see a hundred grand/Could use a gun Son, but fuck bein the wanted man/but if I hit rock bottom then I'ma be the Son of Sam". That's what makes the album so perfect. It's raw and unadulterated.

My friends, this is how you end an album. Everything about "It Aint Hard To Tell" is excellent. The "Human Nature" sample. The suave saxophone on the chorus. The relaxed yet aggressive "criminal slang" that gives "mics menstrual cycles" that "should be locked in a cell". Nasir goes the fuck off in a lyrical barrage that has been unmatched since by anyone in that particular age bracket.

Effects: Well for one, the album is Nas' undisputed magnum opus. EVERY album since then that he's released has had fans wanting that Illmatic state of mind, something that Nas acknowledged on "We Major": "Nas, what the fans want is Illmatic still". It's a gift and a curse that MCs like Raekwon and Jay could attest to.You had Ghost/Rae saying on "Shark Niggas" in so few words that B.I.G. (although not named, you could tell who they were talking about) stole Nas' album cover idea by putting a kid on the cover to Ready To Die. This album also raised the standard for East coast lyricism and caused an East Coast renaissance along with Ready To Die, an album to be released September '94. This album put QB back on the map, as The Infamous was to be released in 95 and the Juice Crew had faded out. It filled a void perfectly. With the previously mentioned comparisons to Rakim (the God MC) and Kool G Rap,Nas exceeded expectations as the album was critical acclaimed by many publications and effectively carved his own lane in hip-hop. The highest honor given to Illmatic was a "5 Mic" rating from The Source that you can read below(5 Mics meaning the album was perfect. No filler or BS at all. You're THAT MC if you got one of those.).

Bonus: You can also read about the making of the album here. It's from the April 2009 issue of XXL. Very interesting to see how classic albums are made. Also here, you can DL Nas' demo tape from '91. Hearing the demo after listening to Illmatic is the perfect bonus. You could easily see the kid had "it".

5 Personal Lessons Learned In 2009

This was a big year for me. The Ws outweighed the Ls by a long shot. I met a lotta people who helped aid in my personal growth and went through situations that I learned from. Graduating college was probably the biggest accomplishment this year. I also lost my grandmother and best friend from growing up. All in all, this year was full of wins and here's the 5 lessons I learned from this year:

5. Network doesn't necessarily equal net worth. You can hand out business cards and emails all you want, but if you don't master the art of knowing how to cultivate win win relationships, it's all for naught. I've particularly learned to avoid name dropping when I initially meet people (depending on most circumstances). It's an annoying habit; when people name drop to me and I know the person who didn't mention them, I wonder what else is going on that I don't know about. No use in claiming you know people if you don't have a mutually beneficial relationship with them. Work on showing why you're someone people should be affiliated with.

4. Be humble. You never know what the future holds. It's funny because I went to church all those years, but the lesson didn't get ingrained in me until I got more experience in the industry. I've been through a lot where I could talk shit...but it's always best to be humble. Egomania is disguised insecurity. You NEVER know where you're gonna end up and who you might need to turn to for help. Keep yourself grounded and make sure you can take advice from those who can school you correctly.

3. The strong move silent. People have a natural curiosity. It's human nature. My personal MO is that I'll hammer out the details and then will make an announcement. 1.) I hate forecasting things that don't come to pass, then I gotta save face and 2.) anticipation builds buzz. Marketing 101. Besides, mystery intrigues people. If there's anything I've learned about people I learned from, they all had a common trait-they were important people, yet unassuming...but when they spoke, you felt the need to have them speak more and more on the topic at hand. Besides, no one likes a loud mouth.

2. Say what you mean and mean what you say. Honesty can take you a long way and people will ultimately respect you. Even if it's not what they immediately want to hear, people can appreciate you keeping it 100. We live in a society where people thrive on immediate gratification and the word "yes". Learn how to speak your piece...and stand your ground.

1. Be a man/woman before anything else. A job doesn't make you what you are in my opinion. Neither does a degree. Neither does your house or car or significant other. You must be someone with integrity before anything. This also goes back to honesty. You must be able to be honest with yourself about the situations you go through and your intentions. I recently had a personal crisis where I was faced with a decision...it's one that I've made for the time being that'll ruffle a few feathers, but the fact that I know I'm upfront about it doesn't hold anyone in a position they don't want to be in.

Marriage and Successful Black Women

Ya'll may have seen this one floating around the internet. I found this extremely interesting. I gave my thoughts elsewhere and decided to compile them here:

Honestly, to be fair, you can't knock them for having standards. If you step your game up, its only natural for you to want someone on your level. I personally think women look to be upgraded by the men they date. My problem is when they expect things of their mate that they don't even have themselves. Like I date women and some of the preferences they have for men don't even make sense to me.
Its like you're @ the point where if you can find a woman who can cook, clean, be smart and is educated you'd better wife her asap. Some women have been brainwashed to have ridiculous standards for their mates. Cool. But if you don't even have your shit right, WHY should I downgrade? Its like someone telling you to fix a car and they don't understand the mechanical system.I've gone on dates with women and asked them what they look for in a man then I ask what they bring to the table...the same generic script that their actions show they don't even live by. I do think that money shouldn't change you..but be real..if you got 50 mil, your standards in a mate would immediately shoot up. IMO, a relationship is balanced when a man knows how to be a man. We think in terms of survival and wanting to be the best at what we do. At least we should. Women IMO think in terms of security. When a woman can find a man that will be a real man, they'll stick with him. Another problem is that women sometimes waste their youth messing with no good men. When I date a woman and she starts talking about dating a thug or someone who sells weed, its a turnoff. Number one, that's a low level hustle and I beieve in going all out. Number 2, I don't wanna deal with no baggage or some hot head down the block trying to kill me over some box .
When we're on the comeup, women recognize it and are really attracted to it. They know that an ambitious hard working man will eventually come up. It is what it is. Women will give men more play of potential than vice versa. Men we look for loyalty, trust and if a chick has our back. I trained myself to find a hardworking female...but my main issue is that I want the credit for my hard work. I've seen it with some of my friends that they'd come up and their girl wasn't supportive at all till they hit big. And honestly, when you're working hard, you want companionship of the opposite sex who can understand that your time is valuable. I talked about my commitment issues but that's something I pointed out. When you want companionship and you're hustling, sometimes you want it at your convenience. If you're upfront about it. No harm, no foul. We're all adults here.
Another issue is that professionalism doesn't define you as a person IMO. Your job/degrees don't make you all of who you are. They are assets and things that you possess...credentials..but end of the day, some of the smartest people do the ugliest things to humanity. Either you're a man/woman first, or you're not. No way around it. As a college graduate, I can say that its something to be proud of no doubt..but it doesn't define me. I define myself by who I am, what has shaped me, my strengths/weaknesses and my belief system. I think as Black folks, we put a high value on education. Definitely no problem with that...but at the same time, social skills are needed to interact with people and to relate to them on a human level. I don't give a damn how many degrees a woman will have if she's a snobby, arrogant person. And mark my words, a lotta the women ya'll think are tough and hard to talk to....a lotta these women just wanna be understood and meet a guy who can talk bout a wide range of subjects. They may make a lot a year, but ya'll lying to yourselves if you don't think they want a dude in their beds @ night. I also don't think women see money like how we males do.
Dating, especially in a city like NYC, is a ridiculous numbers game. The days of settling with the first person you meet are done. Remember, your dating options are limited to what YOU will go out and pursue. That's my attitude. Call it not settling. Its a big world. Then again, women are faced with the double standard of sexual experiences. If a dude goes overseas, 9/10 he's gonna look for some box and doesn't need to feel a type of way. If a chick goes overseas, and gets some pipe, she may initially feel guilty or say some shit like "a lady never tells" or some shit like that.
At some point it goes beyond the blame game and into personal accountability.

Edit: also wanted to add that not every woman is wife material nor man husband material, regardless of social class, education level, etc. :-)

What I Learned From My Dating Experiences in 2009.

This entry was inspired by something I read Friday. I was with some company and we eventually started talking about our signs. I'm a Taurus, so when the ladies found that out, I got a sorta "ennhhh" reaction (in addition to being a Jamaican young man :-/) We ended up reading this natal chart that broke down your signs and all this. Here's some of what mine read concerning the opposite sex:

"Your need for friendship/intellectual stimulus from your partner equals/surpasses your need for love. Your need to rove may hurt those who get involved with you. This high state of energy ends quickly and boredom sets in. Your need for freedom makes a traditional relationship feel oppressive."

I denied all of this with a slick grin. It's a horoscope; all of that is coincidental-or is it? I don't like my life being dictated to me...but that was too on point....

I was thinking about this today as I reflected on the females I’ve dated in ‘09: I get bored EXTREMELY fast and can't/won't commit for SHIT. I've always been like that. Its like "Ok, I like you, you like me, we kick it. What else is there?" My friends always tell me that maybe its the females I'm meeting that only intrigue me on a superficial level. Whatever the case, I need to be mentally stimulated, even if it is short term. I’d like to think my standards are fine: in school/college graduate (preferred) or working, witty, attractive to me, not up in the face of every dude she meets, and at least remotely intelligent with good convo. But why the constant intrigue and curiosity for what else is out there?

Out of respect for people's time, Im upfront and honest. But here’s MY deal: I admit to you all that I’m a commitment-phobe. There. It’s off my chest. Whatever female I date from here on out can read this and use it as evidence. Fine. It got so “hot”…that I went on a lunch date with a female I’d been digging for a while (who didnt know me beyond pleasantries) and out of the light convo we had, she said “You seem like you get bored with situations fast…you don’t have a girl, do you?”

Its like:
• I date around. I like female company. I like picking the female psychology apart with conversation. The way they think is so different from us males. It’s intriguing. I've been told I have a personality that brings people to open up to me. From the females I've dated telling me that and just the way people relate to me on a day to day level, I can say it's true. I’ve also been told I’m an enigma..and that is always charismatic to people on a “get to know you” stage. Plus, dating in NYC is a numbers game. You have to sift out the trash from the treasure. I do think it’s more extreme for females than for males, but still and all, the days of just finding that person on one try seem to be over with. Besides, you’ll know what to look for when/if you wanna settle down. May be a bad excuse, but it’s true. In my opinion of course.
• I haven't even hit my "prime" yet. There's money to be made, people to meet,. I get a lotta flack for it, but I mean...as you explore the world and your options, you reserve the right to be a bit choosy and selective, right? I went to England last year and met some nice females who were cool as shit. I come back to NYC and was just like "Man, this shit is wack over here." Literally. It was like a black mood followed me. So it’s like if you have the world at your disposal, why not just use it for what it is and see what the future holds?
• I mean....at least I'm honest right? That has to count for something. Other guys would tell a chick anything for some ass. I can't (end self righteous rant). No harm, no foul. That way, we're in the clear. No gun to her (their) heads. No one forcing anyone to do anything. No lying. Its the mature approach.
• The knock on me: I’ve been told I make minimal effort, whatever that means. It’s like “I like you, you like me. I’m NOT chasing you”. I’ve never been one to hound women to like me. If we're not committed, I dont owe you anything unless you ask something like "I like you but would like to know if you're seeing anyone else." I’m more of the “Lets do dinner on Friday night @ 7 PM at _____..oh you can’t make it? Fine, we can always reschedule”. W/e they do is their business. I’ll prolly be out anyway or some shit.

They say you are who you date. Well this year’s been interesting. I’m the “fool me once type”; between that and the fact that I know a TON of females, I get a lotta bullshit. Just talked about it ith a friend of mine who knows me well and she said I seem like the “married to my work” type anyway. I've been told that people "like this" date at their own convenience and schedule. No comment.

I figured the the root of it all probably in September and this is probably as personal as I’ll get. This is why I fight for my own identity: I REALLY struggle with letting my parents failed marriage define me and the types of women I date or allow into my life. Beyond what I can put into words. It’s really a pathetic, pitiful state of mind to be in, especially for someone as mentally resilient as myself. I saw how my mom reacted. I just wish she’d had something outside of the marriage besides church. I saw the efforts my pops made, but to no avail. So it’s like “Why commit and take the risk of having someone you love and spend some much time, money and emotions on leave you?” On my life…I feel like I’ve achieved a lot, but that’s gonna be one major thing that haunts me till I get over it. Then there’s the process of loving someone who meets your standards despite their flaws and being at the point where you’ll do anything for them. With me, I've only been in one situation when I've liked a girl, the shit didnt work out and I felt like it was my loss. The other times, it was more like "Ok, we're done talking, I'll go my way and you go to yours." A week later, we'd both be talking to someone new or I'd be bugging out at some party of another or locked up working on my laptop on something. So those outlets cushion any emotional pain from a potential loss. Not only that, but I dont even think my best days are here, so it's like "Fuck it, there'll be more anyway". I've had that mentality since college. In fact, my boys used to make fun of me and say that my catchphrase was "There's more where that came from". I'm proactive if I feel that I can do better...the problem is that thinking dominates my mind 99.9% of the time.

Here's to better women and more growth in 2010. Knowing my luck, something big's right around the corner. Lord willing, we'll see what the future holds. Thanks for reading.

My Favorite Hip Hop Releases of 2009

In retrospect, 2009 was a stellar year for hip hop. Newcomers burst onto the scene and established themselves as the new generation and veterans gave us solid releases. I spent the majority of my night listening to some music I got into my Ipod this year and here’s my top 10. This is all opinion but the first three are sureshot. The others are in no particular order. Without further ado:

The TOP album of the year goes to Only Built For Cuban Linx II. They say you cannot rush greatness and in this case that proved extremely true. This album was 14 years in the making and featured production from Dr. Dre, J. Dilla, RZA, Marley Marl and Alchemist. It had three of the year’s most RIDICULOUS instrumentals: “Surgical Gloves”, a straight SINISTER Alchemist creation; “House of Flying Daggers”, a militant, driving, metallic sonic backdrop from J. Dilla; and “10 Bricks”, another hypnotic J. Dilla creation with a guitar plucked yet thumping instrumental. The album was released to great critical acclaim and recently gained the #7 spot on Time Magazine’s Top 10 albums of 2009. If you haven’t copped this album, please be sure to do so. You wont be disappointed.

The second favorite release of 2009 goes to J. Cole’s The Warm Up. I first heard about Cole when I was interning at Def Jam. My man Vic put me onto the kid and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve made to listen to a new artist. I liked The Come Up, his previous mixtape and really looked forward to this release. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times and he’s been cool and humble. He also got my respect; at his release part for The Warm Up, he stood outside with members of his team and handed out promotional copies of the mixtape and chatted with attendees. That’s the type of hunger you rarely see from a lotta artists. He’s on Roc Nation and with his verses on “Star Is Born” and “Beautiful Bliss” (he TOTALLY blacked out on this shit) , he’s made himself stand out amongst the newer class of MCs. This kid is a problem; I think what separates him from a lotta artists is his obvious hunger and also that he’s relatable. Definitely will look forward to any new releases from him. Download here.

The Blueprint III marks the third best release this year. Little known fact: part of the reason that I took the internship at Def Jam was to do anything to contribute to this album as S.C is my favorite all time rapper. Copying, filing, WHATEVER. Literally. Stan status . Fuck it. Dude ends up going to Atlantic to wrap up his “last” album and drops this on September 8th. Honestly, it took a few spins to grow on me; NO I.D., Timbo and Ye produced the majority of the album, but it coulda used some more audio heat from Just Blaze. I also wasn’t too big a fan of some of the features (Rihanna on “Run This Town”, Drake on “Off That”) , but I must say that Cudi’s appearance on “Already Home” wasn’t as bad as I expected. It’s strategically different from Hov’s previous releases and he knows it, blatantly telling us “niggas want my old shit, buy my old albums”. With the exception of the gratingly annoying “On To The Next One” and the clichéd “Reminder” (where Jay reminds us for the 1,000,000th time why he’s that good), I’ve grown to like the album. Sidenote: For the record, the best “cocky” Jay-z incarnation came on Volume III. In any case, “Empire State of Mind” has proven to be the undisputed NY anthem and “Venus vs. Mars” is a clever take on the male/female dynamic. THE standout track to me that captures Jay is “So Ambitious”. Pharell and Jay gave us a BANGER. Shawn’s more like the elder statesman of hip hop right now, so I can appreciate the mature direction the album took.

So Far Gone made Drake a superstar without any major label backing. It’s a strategic release with more of an R&B undertone than a hip hop one that worked extremely well for the Toronto representative. It spawned two of the biggest hits this year in the Trey Songz assisted “Successful” and “Best I Ever Had” with “Unstoppable” featuring Lil’ Wayne and SantoGold running a close third. This kid can flat out spit as demonstrated on Comeback Season and Room for Improvement, but with Drake displaying his singing talent, SFG really showedanother dimension to his artistry. Drake holds his own with Lil’ Wayne on “Ignant Shit”, spitting lines like “But I never get attracted to fans, cuz an eager beaver could be the collapse of a dam/Always knew that I could figure, how to get these label heads to offer him good figures and me doing the shows getting everyone nervous, cuz them hipsters gon’ have to get along with them hood niggas”. The kid has a distinct ability to pick instrumentals that just bring out the strengths in his delivery. I can’t put my finger on it. It’s just like his instrumentals compliment his lyrics VERY well. Aside, from this, Drake’s been killing damn near every feature/"loose song" he’s been on (see: “Every Girl”, “More Milli”, etc). I am worried about overexposure, but I think when it's all said and done, Drake will give us a quality album.

The Thornton Brothers provide us with Till The Casket Drops, the last "major" release of 2009. This Columbia Records sponsored album gave them a chance to work with the likes of Rick Rubin; the Neptunes, DJ Khalil and Sean C and LV provided the audio heroin for us. My favorite tracks are "Popular Demand" featuring Cam'ron (this shit KNOCKS), "Freedom" and "Life Change". The album seems to give us a look into the "renewed" Clipse. It seems they got away from the "Nightmares" of Hell Hath No Fury and have a new lease on life, especially on "Life Change" which provides a somewhat triuphant end to the album. Malice sees the light: “Money, hoes and clothes is Malice’s past tense/All sins forgiven, all you do is ask Him”. I really think “Eyes on Me” featuring Keri Hilson has crossover radio potential and could be heavy in the clubs. “Doorman” is gonna have to grow on me, but it’s good to see that they finally were able to put out a solid album with all of the label BS that has affected their career.

6 6.The LeftoverUnmixedtape was more of a compilation of old Elzhi tracks featuring featured and unreleased works. The production ranged from Black Milk to Jake One to Moss and provided a great sonic backdrop for Elz to paint his vivd pictures on. The tape literally dropped last week so you can get it here.

Deeper Than Rap was an interesting album. Despite the conflict with Fif. Despite the pictures and denials. Despite the baby mama smuttery. Ross put together a surprisingly cohesive album. If anything, the man’s imagination deserves a lot of credit. “Mafia Music” has to be one of the most assertive tracks released this year with "Magnificent" being a certified problem as well. My main gripe with this album was that "Cigar Music" was left off of it as well as the misplaced tracks featuring The Dream and Ne-yo respectively. All in all, I liked this album. Cant ever forget about "Maybach Music II" either.

8. The Boss of All Bosses mixtape. Good release from Killa Cam. Featured Harlem new jack Vado and DJ Drama. After the atrocity that was Crime Pays, the streets wanted something even slightly resembling vintage Killa. We got it with this release. Check it out.

I think a lot. I liked to be entertained but can appreciate music that can make me think. Manifest Destiny did just that for me. I admittedly don’t go to church anymore and this release made me question some of the decisions I’ve made regarding religion, even if it were for a brief moment of time. It’s definitely not a “gospel rap” record (at all), but it addressed the innate human need to connect to a Higher Power quite well. I will say that Poe is a very “aggressive” artist and you’ll see why when you listen to “Bask in My Glory”. Overall, if you’d like your thoughts provoked check this out.

The Network was a solid release from Young Chris. After peeping The Newprint and a couple of other mixtape releases from the Philly native, I was geeked to get my hand on this. Chris is arguably the second best from State Property (or whatever’s left of it) and this mixtape served as something to hold us over till “Now or Never” comes out (not that I’m holding my breath). “Last Two”? Silly. DL here.

What I will address has been happening from the beginning of time and can lead to questions such as "Are human beings built for monogamy?"..but that's another blog entry...It's just that this year seems to have had extreme cases of the topic at hand-side chicks.

Looks like people were doing a lotta dry snitchin' on themselves with some of the Tweets I saw; you can also factor in the usual social networking frontin and it made for an interesting day.

Anyway here's the definition of a side chick as I know it: a woman who's knowingly involved with a man already in a relationship. Usually there because she does all the things the main chick can't/won't do. Can be there for emotional "support" if things go wrong with the main chick (totally ass backwards). Usually has nothing to lose. Directly proportional to a "Boyfriend #2".

There have been women who were involved in "dating" involved men, but once they found out the situation, they ended it. Applause. This doesnt apply to them.

The latest case: you got Tiger Woods basically being exposed as having been involved in numerous extramarital affairs. Texts, voicemails and all. If I really didnt think he a human being, I would be shocked. Near billionaire athlete= a HIGH rate of pussy being thrown at you. Not that I advocate creeping, but if you do it, you dont leave a "paper trail".

Then you add the racial undertone being that Tiger is married to a White woman. Heh, that makes it WAY more interesting because Tiger's never really been considered "one of the brothas". And ya'll know how the mass media can be with Black men who fuck up in public spotlight....I just hope he's lawyered up......

Sure there's cases of people with kids and joint accounts, etc, but that's something you'll have to measure and decide if you're in that situation. I'm not so I can talk as much shit as I want. :-p
"You feed a sucker, it'll grow to be a bigger leech": I've heard of stories where dudes trick on their side chicks and have seen this with my own two eyes. The greed of these women is bottomless. They have "everything to gain"...and if you develop that habit of feeding them, who's to say they wont blackmail you if they demand a debt you can't pay?

Part of being an adult is knowing how to be upfront and mature. If you wanna live a playboy lifestyle, so be it. It's your choice and you shouldn't feel bad just because some girl you're trying to deal with thinks you're "out there". Just be a responsbile adult (ie regular checkups at the clinic and use of protection) and keep it 100. If a female doesn't wanna be down, that's her choice. There's some who will be down (more than you think). Having a side chick is a coward's way out in my opinion. Besides, they might not like your lifestyle choice...but they'll respect the honesty. A lotta dudes will lie their ass off for some butt. Totally against the rules of the game. If you're gonna play, play fair.

Something incredible is about to happen in the hip hop game. We might be on the verge of an epic showdown.

Last week, Beans released "I Go Off" featuring 50 Cent. Recycled first verse aside (it was from "Last Two"), the song featured 50 Cent talking a WHOLE gang of shit as the end. Peep for yourselves.

Combat Jack wrote an excellent post the other day about the whole situation. 50 and Jay have thrown barbs at each other in past times, but nothing too severe. All that MIGHT end with this track. It seems that 50 is challenging Hov for the NY throne with his guerilla alpha male tactics. I like it. Jay's my favorite artist...but I said a while back how "Kingdom Come" and its whole "I'm sophisticated" approach was kinda forced to me. I understand artistic growth....but a HUGE part of me misses the niggerishness of Vol III Hov where he talks about popping bottles on the White House lawn. How could you NOT miss that. Blueprint III was cool...but it's like he's outgrown the hip hop game. He's more of an elder statesman now.

Enter Beans. He's been on a gang of interviews and each time I hear the guy, I just feel bad for him...but at the same time, he's OBVIOUSLY a pawn. It's all just entertainment, but 50 is a master manipulator. Dude will get at anyone using anything they hold dear (ie this ).

Re: my first "Cuffin Season" entry: A lotta people hit me up asking about my personal situation. I like women. That's all I'll reveal. I'm not one to broadcast my business, much less online. Not that I wouldnt claim a girl I like...I just dont like nosy people. I'm not opposed to having a partner...but it's gonna be based on "game recognize game" and not just because I need a bosom to snuggle up on. Recently, Ive been getting Facebook statuses dedicated to me. I'm not being conceited about it either. I'm probably one of the most humble, down to earth people you'll ever meet...but that doesnt mean I cant call it like I see it. Not even playing the game right...anything worth having is worth paying for. No one likes the cow if the milk is free. I dont understand how people can invite themselves out on other people's dime...but that's neither here nor there.

The latest trend seems to be dudes acting like bitches because girls wont go out on dates with them. Bringing up other dudes a girl might be seeing. Acting catty and snippy. That's that bullshit. I was schooled that you aint supposed to even worry about other dudes because you and a female's time together is your and her time together. Unless you're trying to wife her and you wanna see if she's single or not should be the only time you even talk about another dude to her or unless its your boy and you dont wanna come between whatever they got going on. It's a ho trait to me. I dont understand why dudes have this obsession with other dudes. I dont. It's borderline disturbing. You cant force a woman to like you. Its like the scene in "Don't Be A Menace" where Marlon held a Tec to a girls head for her #. That's how some of ya'll dudes act when ya'll like a girl. Then ya'll wonder why she's ultimately turned off. A woman should choose you to be with you. If you cant read her body language when she's around you, that's your problem.

Rejection makes you stronger. Sure, you're a dude with an ego but not everyone is obligated to be romantically attracted to you. I dont see what's so hard about not accepting the fact that someone doesnt feel the same way about you as you do about them. That will hinder someone from finding someone who does care. A female, I can understand. Women arent used to rejection like how we are. It's been said that a woman who knows her powers can get anything she wants. I dont know how much I agree with that statement, but I've seen examples that confirm it. I have female friends who didn't have dudes feel the same way about them. It's funny but intriguing at the same time. The wide range of emotions expressed are "60 Minutes" worthy. Like a frenzy.....But as a dude, you should be mentally prepared for rejection. Problem is...a lotta cats are raised from single parent households with mothers who softened them by coddling them. They grow up meeting women expecting them to be all over them. I'm speaking about women who have jobs, school, other responsiblities besides massaging a fragile ego...

Fellas, I understand about women....I totally do. I've dealt with my share of raggamuffins in my day. I've dealt with a LOT in my 7 years of dating. You go through bumps and bruises. You meet someone and they got a shitload of baggage you dont wanna deal with. Or you're dating their "representative" until the real them comes out. It's basic economics: when the supply is down, the demand will skyrocket. And from what I'm hearing/seeing from people I'm close with, thats exactly what's happening. I'm hearing horror stories from females about ya'll dudes man.

Dont be in a rush to lock a girl down. A lot of them are in their 20s and wont even know what they want/will appreciate in a man till later on in their lives.
You look desperate and pathetic. Even if you are, package yourself to at least appear mentally balance. Slobbering at the dinner table ass dudes.
Females don't like "the obvious". Unless you and shorty have a rapport before, you cant just take a girl out and spill all the beans right there. "Hey sweetie, I know this is our first date, but I think you're the best woman ever and I want us to be together". The fuck outta here. (I've said this in jest...but I know dudes who've done that with a straight face)....

See in a city like NY...the dating pool is what you make it IMO. If you're in the entertainment business, it gets even smaller. It's funny how many millions of ppl there are here, yet there's only 6 or so degrees of separation (1-2 if you're in the business). I've talked with female friends of mine who're on the grind...and ya'll dudes gotta know how to make women feel like women. It's bad enough they gotta deal with the 8404399859 dudes hollering all types of shit at them all day then to deal with work and then spend an hour on the phone or go on a date with a lame ass dude who's insecure. I sympathize with ya'll ladies....

Post-College Life

Life after college...

To me....life after college has been pretty alright. Mainly because I've always worked/interned during my last two years in school, it was a relatively easy transition for me. I took a semester off to work and came back to knock out my last class in August, with an official graduation date of 2009.

For the record, I hated Baruch. Too much of a "square" school for my liking. Like literally. People would walk with a stick up their asses. I did meet a lotta incredible people and made some lifelong friendships though. One of my biggest regrets was that I didnt hit up enough bars and clubs. I became an absolute workaholic in my final two years once I figured out what I wanted to do and how to get there. I didnt drink or bug out as much...and now I'm realizing you need that balance. College is the best time for someone to do that because post college, you have more responsibilities...and as an entrepreneur, I can tell you that you have to monitor yourself because you have a brand to protect and uphold. My first two years, I bullshitted and used to play NBA Live and talk shit and all that...it was cool while it lasted...

I've been fortunate to get a job in the industry I've had experience in. The business I co-own does lifestyle marketing and promotions, but my "day job" is in the music publishing industry. I got it through a friend of mine that I've given advice to and that's a testament to the power of networking. There's no point in doing a job if you dont want to be the best @ it....so I've asked my boss if he can recommend me some books on publishing. I just want to stay on top of the game. Being at major labels and marketing firms has shown me a lot and I believe that everything happens for a reason. (I do have a tinge of regret that Sony didnt follow up with me for those three positions. I loved the environment and morale there). I HIGHLY doubt I'll anywhere forever, so I always keep an eye out as part of my exit strategy and it is my first job outta college so....I'm not the smartest person, but I've always been curious about how things work. I think that trait has gotten me farther than I could have if I didnt care. Its psychologically debiliatating to not have a job after college.Its like you spent all that $ for nothing...but you gotta think long term as well.

My advice to college students is

Stay informed. Go to seminars on campus. You'll meet a lotta people to network with and get good advice from.
Stay close with your professors. They can be good for recommendations, refer you to jobs or give you practical advice on the job industry you plan to get into.
USE YOUR CAREER DEVELOPMENT CENTER. I cant stress this enough.
Moderation. Sure you need liquor, girls and "all that"...but you better make sure you dont mess up in class. Balance all that out.
Drink and party and "all that". The only time you'll be doing it post college is on the weekends (if you want to be an effective worker)...

I've been told that my resume will look official in a few years Lord willing. I hope it will.

Word spread around fast Friday morning that Beanie Sigel addressed his issues with Jay-z on wax. He allegedly took shots @ Hov at Powerhouse in Philly, so seeing this isn't a total shocker. But still, it's like no one expected it to come to this. In the wee hours of Friday morning, DJ Kay Slay premiered Beanie Sigel's "Average Cat", a song in which he addressed his issues with Jay-z. I personally didnt take it as a "diss record", but the most revealing and interesting parts come near the song's end. Take a listen:

Beans also called into Charlemagne's show to address the issue. This was interesting to say the least. From revelations that Jay only paid the Young Gunz a little over 1K for a show (with them splitting it) to talking about Dame's reportedly crooked business practices to saying that Jay never visited him in prison, the interview was a little disturbing for me as a HUGE Roc fan.

Then you have Jay's response from a press conference:

Ok, it's entertainment. On the outside looking it we can only take the shit for face value. But there's 2 sides to every story and then there's the truth.

I do feel bad for Beans. GREAT talent. However, his personal demons have affected his artistry. No one told him to get a fed case or let off shots. He just has a history of being a live wire and has talked about it on wax with songs like "I Can't Go On This Way" and "Dear Self". "The B.Coming" was his BEST work but the promo game was messed up because of the Fed trial. (Public Enemy #1 was a helluva mixtape). You can't hold a man's hand. Much less in the music industry. It's like "Goodfellas" when Paulie had to dead Henry because of certain things that he was involved in. It's a business first and the impression of Beans that I get is that he's a loyal dude. Not saying Jay is a snake because we dont know all the facts, but in the business, people will definitely protect their own interests. It was interesting to note that Beans said Jay never visited him in jail. I can understand both sides. Beans thinking that that's his man and he cant even visit him in prison; however, Jay wasnt responsible for the decisions that got Beans in prison in the first place......
Jay giving Young Gunz $1250 a show with them splitting it and Dame reportedly embezzling funds behind Beans back? O_o. As an artist, Jay is legitimate...but personally, signing to a label owned by another artist is something I would NEVER do. Your project will never be a priority and the majority of the marketing dollars will go to the bigger artist (who in turn usually has a track record of justifying the budget anyway). Artist development is dead as is, and labels aint got time to hand feed someone and watch them grow into a star. That's the thing with a lotta artists as well. They're from adverse situations and look for a way out so labels offer them contracts with clauses (Ibelieve nothing is hidden. If you're a hustler, you'll look at terminology, etc) and they dont understand them. If that's true, Dame is wrong for that.
Jay did give Beans a label, clothing line, etc and he never went platinum on any individual album (2 gold albums with around 2.1 million sold for his career. I did an artist roster @ Def Jam and that's what it said anyway). It's been said that Beans had two Bentleys, but he admitted that he didn't have an accountant or a management team on his side. Those things definitely hurt his positioning as an artist. A good management team can get an artist cross-branding initiatives (Ex: Hip Hop Since 1978 with Wayne and Jeezy; Violator) and it's just plain common sense to have an accountant.
As a fan, it sucks to see the lack of promotion for good albums. "The B.Coming" and "Free At Last" were very solid releases. But it's a business. If you have an artist that's multiplatinum, a label aint gonna funnel money to promote an artist with a gold discography (much less, decreased sales in this climate). Much less in the time period where the bigger artist has a history of good sales. Hov in the 4th quarter is a legitimate investment for the label and that's exactly what they did. Just sayin' that from a business standpoint, it was logical.
State Property did bring an edge to the Roc that previously wasnt there. Cue Hot 97 Takeover Freestyles I and II. Beans WAS the frontline soldier whenever the Roc had an issue with an outside camp. The "street cred" was there and from the outside looking in, it was a good move for the Roc. I think Chris was the biggest loser in this whole shit as he had the bars and most potential. Beans and Freeway are "niche" artists...not to disrespect them or put em in a box...but Chris...Chris had "it" man....i hate to see good artists in limbo....or get begged to get dropped which brings me to another topic.....
Side Note: I've seen that some label contracts have clauses that say if an artist sells over 200K records, they're legally obligated to make another album. Obviously, this depends on the amount of albums they owe a label as a result of the signing. To my understanding (and I may be wrong), how labels work (or used to anyway) was that an artist has to sell X amount of CDs to pay back his total budget (now there's 360 deals that take a piece of everything), but the artist wouldnt get paid royalties until that amount of units are sold + more. So lets say I sell 200K units but my budget is set up to get me gold sales (500K). I now owe the label ANOTHER album, AND I'm in the red and have to make up those albums and if worst comes to worst, I gotta argue with a label about my follow up singles and possibly come outta my own pocket to promote the shit via tour/other avenues...it's real interesting stuff....
Just for the hell of it....I wanna see Beans address this more on wax....He's served Hov bar for bar on a majority of the tracks they were on (another blog entry for another time....*plays "It's On") and this song sounds like it was just a "warning shot"

I grew up listening to Rocafella. Classic records and flicks. Sad to see that all this had to go down like this.....

A Look at "Before I Self Destruct"

Re: 50 Cent's "Before I Self Destruct" leaking to the internets...I know my man DM over there @ G-Unit is PISSED. I feel bad for the guy. But in this day and age, leaks are inevitable.

Enter "Before I Self Destruct". Rumor is that it's the last studio album that 50 owes Interscope. If so, he makes a helluva point. After the "War Angel" LP that came out a while back, I sorta had a feeling Fif would be on the grizzly.

For what it's worth, I liked his first two albums (The Massacre was mad underappreciated), butI was so-so on "Curtis" . I recognize the man's talents and his impact on the game. Dude is entertaining as hell (Pimpin' Curly series) , has a classic under his belt ("Get Rich Or Die Tryin") and has some serious bangers. But I gotta call it like it is. This album has been pushed back more than Steve Harvey's real hairline. The whole "beef" with Ross was hilarious...but the consensus was that Ross had 50 backtracking. Whatever the case, 50 definitely sends a message on this joint.Production ranges from Dr. Dre to Premier to Timbaland to Ty Fyffe. By now, I trust 50's ear for beats.

"The Invasion" sets the tone for the album perfectly. It's ominous. Grimy. The thing I like about Fif is that he's blatant, even if it is overbearing sometimes. He demostrates this on "So Disrespectful" and sends shots to his baby mother, The Game and Young Buck in the process. As usual, his ear for beats is ridiculous with bangers like the anthemic "Ok, You're Right" (I LOVE this joint) and "Gangster's Delight". Emimem tears his verse on "Psycho" a new asshole. Now...."Strong Enough"..I don't know what zone the man was in making that song, but it's THAT ridiculous.. That song is for anyone who misses "GRODT" 50. "Crime Wave" itself will make you want to wear all black and put on an ice grill.

Only really wack songs: The "gun as metaphor for a girlfriend" concept gets a turn on "Hold You Down". It's a tired concept IMO. "Do You Think About Me" serves as a good commercial single but it sounds like a "Curtis" leftover. This album doesnt have a DEFINITE club banger like "In Da Club"...but if you take the direction Curtis went in, it is what it is. "Ok, You're Right" might have potential though....

"Baby By Me" has been getting play in clubs. I can also see "Get It Hot" as another club single. Neither are "In The Club" or "Disco Inferno".

The album is a return to "GRODT" 50. Point blank. Between this album and Rae's joint, I've had a good dosage of grimy rap for the past few weeks. I give it a 4/5

Hate is SUCH a strong word. At least with dislike, you get a softer connotation. Like your issues could be worked out. Hate comes off like ya'll are mortal enemies who won't stop till the other person is dead in a pool of blood and pus....

Well to start, they say if no one hates on you, you're not doing anything of relative importance. I agree wholeheatedly. But if that's the case, what's the difference between that and constructive critcism?

IMO, at least with constructive criticism, it shows a person cares enough about you to point out your flaws and tell you about them. People have lost the ability to respect honesty. Then again, it's not what you say but how you say it. Hate is just blatant and outright.

Especially in this business, people have ridiculous egos. I will go on record as saying that artists and assistants are two of the most sensitive groups of people that I've been around in my brief time in show business. Then you have the people who name drop like a muthafucka. Name dropping does have its place; just make sure you and said person are that cool because I've pulled cards/seen people get their cards pulled and it's EMBARRASSING. It just looks dumb if EVERY time you see someone or when you first meet them (unless it's through a mutual friend or something), they're dropping so and so's name. I just look @ people who constantly name drop like "Ok, you know so and so, but they dont even claim you so what's the point?" or "That's funny, he woulda mentioned you" . But artists, ohhhh boy. I've dealt with this a million times:

Artist: "What do you think of my music?
Me: "It has its strengths and weaknesses (I go into specifics like lyrics, catchiness, marketing potential, instrumentals) but it doesnt do a lot for me. Still, keep doing what you do and don't take my word as the end all be all.I'm just one outta millions. Practice makes perfect"
Artist: *mad face*
They wont tell me upfront that I'm a "hater", but I've heard of them telling ppl such...all too familiar.

What the fuck is the point of asking people their opinion if you don't want the truth? I can't stand people with fragile egos. I absolutely can't. That's like a girl asking me if she gained weight and then I look like an asshole for telling her yes. Don't ask questions you don't want the answers to!

I honestly dont really give a damn about other people to "hate" on them. They're gonna do what they want and I'm gonna run my course. God willing, we'll see each other at the top. I'm not perfect and have been told about my flaws plenty of times by people. Selfish, too quiet for my own good (people always like to know what other people are thinking and it jars them to be around silent observers), know it all, "busy" (like idle hands get results), aggressive, you name it. People just have this strange obsession with shitting on other people. I admire consistency. If you dont like someone, don't go and smile in their face. At least keep it 100 and avoid them or just keep them on a need to know basis. I try not to burn bridges because:

You never know who's gonna be what one day. I stressed this time and time again to my fellow interns @ Def Jam when I used to be there. You dont have to be this bubbly sycophant, but you should recognize people for their talents and what they bring to the table. Real recognize real and potential recognizes potential. People have turned from interns to execs. I've read stories. I take most things in this game as business decisions, but when someone you consider an "acquaintance" does something sideways, you give them the jaundice eye. I've even had people I consider family do suspect shit, but it's part of the breaks. I have an all too keen memory. It does serve as fuel.
I like win win situations. In everything. That may be personal flaw of mine to look at things as a business decisions in terms of assets/liabilities (especially the females I get interested in)...but I do like/know how to build relationships with people. I've heard that I'm trustworthy...and I've seen firsthand that people feel comfortable around me and feed off of my energy, whether it be positive or negative at the time. Even to the point of them telling me extremely personal things but hey...We may not like each other but if business comes and we both can benefit, lets get the money. I've learned to take they way people conduct themselves professional over my personal dislikes for them in business. Coincidentally, I've never really been involved in any workplace scandals or gossip or anything like that. All that is for birds and it's bad business as it hurts workplace morale. That and the fact that I keep to myself and tell people what they need to know as far as my personal life goes.
I HATE apologizing to people. It's a pride thing. That's another personal flaw. I can admit when I'm wrong. I just hate it being the highlight reel in someone's day like "Yeah, you were wrong, you think you know everything, look at you know." (another reason why I dont really talk to any of my exes/ex girls Ive talked to LOL)

For me...I can honestly say that it takes a LOT for me to really "hate" a person. It's a reflection of insecurity if you ask me. From experience, it's usually when I've gone through some WILD drama with them for me to give them that satisfaction and i just want NOTHING to do with them. Like I dont EVEN want them in my radar for something that messed up to potentially happen.Or it happens that you get a good position somewhere or get a good business deal or even get a better mate than the one you were dealing with. All of a sudden, your life's soundtrack becomes a mixture of females gossiping about you and dudes being bitches and talking shit behind your back. All mad you stepped your game up. Especially when you keep people at arm's length, they always find a way to try to weasel back to get back in your life. Speaking from experience.

Then you have the people whose lives are so mundane that they create imaginary haters. You know...

That person who swears everyone in her life is against her. Insecure. Usually a victim of bad relationships, romantic and otherwise. Always suspicious. Usually have nothing going on so every move in their life is newsworthy material in their minds. (Note: the adage "Strong move silent, the weak start riots" is true. People don't need to know your every move). They can do no wrong. Egomaniac. Surrounded by Yes Men/women. Gassed up beyond belief. Usually starving for money or recognition. (For the record, being a socialite is lame to me. I got bills. Being on the scene drinking free alcohol and meeting the same ppl over and over all the time doesn't pay them.)

So all in all, get on your hustle. The money will come as well as the hate....but people even killed Jesus Christ. You can't save everyone.
